A Tool for Helping Families Talk about Alcohol
Who is it for?
Parents and families.
It’s important to start talking and listening with your child about your values and beliefs on alcohol as early as possible. By maintaining open and honest communication, you can help your children feel comfortable talking with you about difficult issues, such as alcohol or drugs. Supported by the Alcohol forum this toolkit was developed by the Moville & District Family Resource Centre to help young people and families to communicate in an open healthy way about alcohol.
Aim:
The toolkit assists families to talk about alcohol. This family Conversation uses two questionnaires; one for children and one for parents. It is hoped that by listening and talking together, family members will learn more about how they each see and use alcohol.
The toolkit works in three steps.
- Step 1– Children complete questionnaire
- Step 2– Parents complete questionnaire
- Step 3– Family sits down and listens to each other’s answers.
The Moville Family Conversation questionnaires are used to encourage open communication about alcohol within the family and as such the content of completed questionnaires is confidential to the family involved.
